Congratulations to 6th graders Damian Harris and Raphael Nimubona for their remarkable PowerPoint projects on East Africa! Congratulations to 7th grader Dereion Nephew for his outstanding PowerPoint project on the Civil War! Keep up the good work...more awards to come!

Today the nation has once again made history! Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States. Be sure to monitor the first 100 days of the Biden administration, as our 46th president tackles pending issues ranging from the Coronavirus and climate change to criminal justice and the economy. As we look towards the future, today marks a celebration for girls and women everywhere as we welcome the first female and first female of color Vice President! Finally, be sure to monitor the second impeachment processes of outgoing President Donald J. Trump in the wake of the D.C. riots.

Hello Lawson parents and surrounding communities,

This week in Social Studies we're learning about Sub-Saharan Africa (6th grade), the Oil industry in Texas (7th), and the Industrial Revolution in America and Great Britain (8th). Also, make sure to tune into the U.S. Senate election run-offs in Georgia. Finally, stay informed concerning developments in our nation's capital regarding riots and the spread of political unrest in the wake of Congress confirming results of the Electoral College and the recent victory of President-elect Joe Biden and first woman (and woman of color) Vice President-elect Kamala Harris!

Greeting Lawson Parents,

The Social Studies department would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your child as we embark upon another school year. Whether it's World Geography, Texas History or U.S. History, we are committed to shaping our students into 21st century scholars and civic minded young adults ready for a demanding and competing society.

A few reminders: On Tuesdays and Thursdays is homework and the weekly Exit Ticket is taken every Friday. We also encourage our students to stay familiar with current affairs.

This year we're continuing virtual education, so scholars would want to keep laptops charged and in good shape. Also, a good night's rest and breakfast is sure to put these young scholars off on the right foot.

If there are any questions or queries, feel free to contact us anytime. We are here to serve!

Best,

Travis Braziel & Paul Buxie, Jr.

Teaching Social Studies gives us an opportunity to recount hundreds and thousands of years worth of history. These events give us perspective on how to navigate our world today. This brings life to that nostalgic saying, "History Repeats Itself." Mr. Braziel & I are honored and excited to be teaching Social Studies at the Lawson Academy as well as creating excitement in our scholars for the learning process. This week we will be delving into the inner sanctums of The American Revolution for 8th grade, European Exploration for 7th grade, and The United States and Canada for 6th grade. Students are encouraged to access outside research to get acquainted with the material. These sources of information can come from online articles, Google, You-tube videos etc. Looking forward to an amazing year with all of OUR Scholars!

All The Best,
Paul A. Buxie Jr.
